Production plan with consideration for
visual and special effects
Brief:
The piece I have chosen to make is a short film sequence, I have decided to a Superhero/fantasy genre film sequence. This is because I think I could use and experiment multiple different effects.
Running Time:
The Running time for this sequence will be about 3 – 4 minutes.
What I intend to make:
This sequence will be created to show different types of special and visual effects. This means that I will use multiple different effects. My piece is about a boy who has special abilities. He is bullied for simply being different to everyone else. So one day, he uses his powers against the whole school. The weather has dramatically changed and everything is dark. The sequence will show how the whole area has been destroyed and slowly move throughout the school so you can see. At the end of the sequence, you actually see the character. Then you see a flashback of him being bullied. These include problems at school and at home. Eventually, it cuts back to the present where you see him determined and looking ready.
The target audience is teens from the age 12+. This is because the actor will be aged at that age group. Also, that is the target audience because bullying is very common for people of that age group, so many of the viewers can relate to this topic. Finally, because it is set in a school, it will attract the teen audience. This is because this is a place which almost all teenagers go to, so to see this location in an unrealistic view would be interesting to this age group. So this is why my sequence will appeal to my target audience.

Audience Appeal:
I believe that my sequence will appeal to my target audience as it will be a similar type of film to which they typically watch. It will also be able to relate to the audience as the main actor is the target audience's age. My film is a source of escapism, as it takes people way form what their real life is like. This will also help them to engage with the sequence. My audience type would be active, as they will be able to discuss this film with friends and have their own opinions on the characters. My target audience should be fans of the superhero genre. However, it is also a niche genre as it is quite dark and mystical (fantasy)

Planned Special and Visual Effects:
I will mist to create an eerie effect. This will be moving so I will need to animate it. I will do this in either Photoshop or find an existing one to overlay on my video.

There will be a CGI electrical wire hanging from the ceiling which will have sparks coming from the exposed end. I will either do this in Photoshop and add an electrical flare with sound effects over the top.
Towards the end, there will be some alien type crystals stuck in the wall, this will be done through CGI as well. I will create this either on Photoshop or use and existing one.
There will also be holes in the floor and walls, most of these will have cracks in them. Again I will either use Photoshop or use existing ones.
I will use makeup to create a ferocious vein from the forehead of the character. This will be accomplished with paint and makeup.
I will use sugar glass for smashed glass on the floor. This will be done through buying the sugar glass and smashing it. This will make it look realistic, but it won’t be sharp or dangerous.

Conducting Recce:
Now that my script is done, I have to locate the locations where I wish to film. I also have to ask for permission to film in my desired location as I don’t own that place. Once I gain permission to film there, I will use the selected dates approved to film.
I wish to film in this location as it really represents the character of my sequence. It shows his age and what he is doing in his life without having to tell you. It also shows that he hasn’t quite got to adult hood.
To gain permission to film, I will email Netherhall School to ask for permission. If they don’t respond to the first email, I will send them another one telling them that I am going to film and the dates I will film on.

The Places which I am going to film:
- Outside, Netherhall School Grounds (Permission Needed)
- Corridor within Netherhall School (Permission Needed)
Budget Considerations:
These are the important assets which are needed to create this Visual and Special effects sequence:
The total cost for creating this sequence is £861.00 . Obviously, I will not be paying this for production. As most of the equipment and crew will be provided by the school. My Crew and actors will consist of my friends and also people who do CTEC media with me. This is because of their own experience in the job roles which they will be provided.
The equipment which I would hire will be free because the school is able to provide it to me for completely free. The location is set at the school so I don’t have to pay for transport and the school have allowed me to film in that location.
I will have to pay for some prosthetic make-up as it isn’t available for free. I will be able to apply the make up myself and it would cost me £16.00. This is the makeup:

Discuss the issues and risks for the proposed multiple effects:
In order for the creation of my sequence do safe for all of the people in it, I need to create a Risk Assessment. This way people will be aware of the risks when creating this sequence.
Feasibility of my Risk assessment:
The skills the production team would need:
There are many skills on which my production team would need so that this Risk assessment will become feasible. They need to read and understand all of the risks which could potentially happen. They need to be able to spot the risks and prevent any harm from being caused. A feasible skill which they could learn is how to properly lift the equipment without doing damage to themselves. I will show them how they must do this, this means that this skill is feasible and it will happen.
Another risk prevention skill that they will need is the ability to stop others from griping over wires and equipment. For example, they will need to lifter the wires and hold them neatly so they don't get in the way if others. The will also need to make sure that the equipment is set up properly so that no one can fall over it. These are all feasible skills to learn.
Resources available to implement the solutions to your hazards:
The crew will need to view how to lift the equipment properly, this is a feasible resource as I will be able to tell them what to do. The crew will need to hold wires properly and be able to set up the equipment correctly, the resource is very feasible as they already know how to do this, it was part of their training on this media course.
Tripping over rubbish is a skill that they will have to already have. A feasible resource for this risk is unavailable and therefore unusable. The resource for a fire is a fire alarm, most people know how to use one of these, I will go over it, and it is a feasible resource for the prevention of this unlikely risk. Electrocution is a very unlikely risk, the resources for the prevention of this trial can be found on the internet, however it is common knowledge to not mix water and electricity together. So the resources for the prevention I this risk are very feasible.
The actual cost and feasibility of your solutions:
None of my solutions to my risk will cost me any form of money. They are all free and provided resources, such as fire alarms and internet videos. This means that it is feasible to use these solutions without having to spend any money.
How the risks and solutions apply to the production piece:
My risks and solutions do and don't apply to the piece. Most of the risks are quite possible to happen, for example you could easily trip over equipment or wires. So these risk are feasible and would apply to the production piece.
However, the chance of fire, electrocution and back injury from lifting heavy equipment is very unlikely. So these aren't very feasible and they dont really apply to the production piece.

Filming Process:
What we went through to Film:
There were a few different processes we needed to do to film my sequence, they are:
Setting Up:
To create my Special and Visual effects sequence, there was a lot of gear needed to create it. We had to get Lighting, Cameras, Tripods, Cables and a Clapper Board. We had to make sure we took all the equipment when we moved form scene to scene, and we also had to make sure it was all set up properly and we ensured that there wasn't any risks when setting up.
Special Effects:
The special effects within my sequence was makeup, I had to get a Special Effects Make-up pen to do the effect I desired. This is so it looked compelling and realistic. This was done before the shoot so everything was ready at shooting time.
Visual Effects:
For the visual effects, I required to use real lighting to help later on in Post-Production. So, I had to set up to light boxes and pulse them in sync when filming. These took a while to set up and we had to practice turing them in sync with each other.
Directing:
As I was the director for the sequence, I had to make sure that everything went to plan and there weren't any issues whilst on shoot. I also had to make sure that there weren't any rules being broken, such as Legal and Ethical or Location Rules.
Crew:
As this shoot was big and there was a lot of required equipment, I needed a crew to help with the production. So I had to get the crew to help with carrying, setting up and using the equipment. I had two lighting operators, a Camera Man and a Runner. They all helped with creating the sequence and made it much easier.
Recording:
When recording, I had to inform the crew what to do and make sure that the shot was as I desired it to be, to do this I checked on everything before the record button was pressed and I made sure everyone knew what they were meant to be doing.

Evidence of filming process:
Evidence of permission:
Permission required to film and use effects on location or in the studio:
As my special effects for the sequence is just make-up, I will not require to ask for permission to use this when on my shoot. However, if I was to use an effect which could cause damage or disruption (such as an explosion), I would have to ask for permission.
The skills the crew will need to gain these permissions:
For my crew to gain these permissions, they will need to prove that they are able to do the job. They have to have some form of proof that they can do this. As all of my crew are on my course, I already know that they are qualified for this job.
The process the team have gone through to gain permission:
To gain permission for the filming of my Unit 17 Video, I had to email the Netherhall Sixth Form office as well as the Netherhall School office to request for permission to film on their grounds. They didn't reply to my first email so I sent them another one a week later informing them that I will be filming on my desired date. They replied confirming that I could film on their property as long as I followed the rules that they sent me.
The financial cost of permission and the time needed to gain permission:
There wasn't any financial cost needed to gain the permission. This is because I am currently going to this school and they are aware that it is for my course. However, if this was a real shoot, I would have to spend money to rent a location which wasn't owned by me or someone willing to lend it to us. It took about one week to gain permission to film at the school, this is because my first email didn't get answered so I had to send another on and they replied.
The regulations governing control of substances, hazardous substances and health even if not using these:
As my sequence doesn't contain any of these substances which will damage the health of the cast or crew. But if I was to use any of these substances, there would be some regulations which I need to follow. The cast and crew would need to be far away enough so they dont get effected. There will need to be a professional on the shoot who know what they are doing and how to prevent issues from happening. I would also need to make sure that it doesn't harm others, as the location which I am using is open to others who aren't part of the cast/crew.
How the producer intends to work within the scope of the risk assessment and what procedures they will follow to make sure cast and crew are safe:
When the cast and crew get on to the set, there will be a few thing which I will need to go over before production starts. I will need to re-inform everyone about the risks and solutions which are within the risk assessment. They will also be required to sign the risk assessment to make sure that they are aware and they cannot sue me.
