This trailer begins with some simple logoing, it starts off with the logo for IFC Films. This is done to educate the audeince as to who created this movie, this is so the comapany can be researched into by the audience or if they have seen some of their other films then they may get some idea on what this film will be like. The first thing we see is a shot of some council estate flats, this infroms the audinece of the location where this film will be set but it also connotes the social status of the characters and the tone of the film. This will allow the audience to build up their own character profile on what they might expect the characters too look like and behave like. After this shot we see a shot of a girl's back as she is looking out from a balcony on her flat seeing what she sees. Then we get a shot of her applying makup allowing the audence to have an idea of how old this character is. This theme of 'personal' shots continues as we see close up after close up giving the audeince details about this characters life which allows the audience to build up a connection and relation to this character. This is done to create a relationship between the audeince as they can either relate to her or gain a deeper understanding of what life is like in her shoes. After these shots, we see a shot of an award which this film has obtained, this infroms the viewers that this is a high quality product and that there is a reason to go and see this movie. During the playing of this trailer, you can hear different sound effects and music which are used to connote location and also to build up the tension in the trailer. The trailer builds up with chrescendo till a cliff hanger, this leaves the audience on the edge of their seats and will make them want to go and see the film to find out what happens.
Audience:
The audience identified for this film trailer would be quite young and of a similar age to the characters show in the video. The audience will be interested in social realism films as they will have to like powerful meanings and a desire to watch something which is a representation of reality. This trailer will appeal to both male and female audiences but more specifically to the female audience as they are more represented in this trailer. As I stated that the age target for this audience will be quite young, other ages are represented to even adults of ages about 25 could relate to this trailer and they will then want to go and see this film. The content will relate the younger audience more as they are who is represented the most and topics discussed are things which an audience of an age around 15+ will experience or have experienced in their life.
Purpose:
The purpose of this film trailer is to gain attraction from their target audience to the actual product itself (the film). This film's purpose is to inform and entertain the audience. The trailer itself was created to entertain the audience as it shows aspects from the story which leaves the audience wanting more and wanting to find out what happens in these aspects. This advert informs the audience by telling the common story of coming of age, which is a very common story to tell an audience as this is easy for everyone to relate to. The trailer hides important information from the audience to ensure that they want to watch the film, this is called the cliff hanger of the trailer.

M1 - Analyse the different approaches used in the identified promos
Music video Topics:
- Perform the song
- Tell a story
- Discuss a concept
Dizzie Rascal - Love this Town
How is Meis-En-Scene used?
Costumes: The costumes worn by the actors in this music video apply to the stereotypes the music video is trying to portray, this is because they typically want the characters to be dressed like stereotypical east London gangsters. They look like this as these costumes will make the characters look intimidating and like they will damage property which is what the audience will expect. Clothing items used are hoodies, hats and face-masks which help with the connotation aimed in this music video production. Actors: The actors are representative of the stereotypes again, their age being in their 20's, which helps to portray the theme of violence which is stereotypically associated with people of this age. You as an audience would assume with the costume and the location, that the actors are up to no good. Locations: The location for this music video was set in London, as an audience, you would assume it's a rough area. The locations used are seen as very rough as well, they are places such as a bus stop, or a beaten down street. But this is purposeful, as the music video is about 'Cleaning up the town' and making it a better place to be. How is lighting used? In the beginning of the music video, the lighting is very grey and dark, this helps to represent the negative themes aimed for the production. The lighting only changes toward the end when the police throw a smoke bomb at the "Rioters" which is originally red (possibly connoting violence or danger), but then it turns pink. Which represents the 'Love for the Town' and the community around them. How is Sound used? In this music video there aren't many audio sound effects in the sequence, this is because the video is a music video so there is little need for sound effects. There is one notable sound effect used, which was the sound of a police siren at the beginning of the music video. This is used to help connote the location and the theme of riot from the music video. How is Editing used? The editing in this music video is very simple, and there is only one use of visual effects. This use is right at the end when there is a heart created with smoke above London. Simple cuts are used in between shots to tell the story, and colour correction makes scenes look dark when needed as this connote the stereotypical crime and violence, but when the ending turns out to be positive, the colour correction changed to make a more bright and positive coloured sequence. |
Lethal Bizzel - Babylon's Burning the Ghetto
How is Meis-En-Scene used?
Costumes: The characters in this music video wear stereotypic outfits for the musical genre and the age of the actors. This is so the music video appeals to the target audience and so they fit the style of a London criminal. There was only one notable brand worn in the video (Y-3), a Japanese streetwear brand which has been adopted by London criminal culture. Other clothing items worn are facemarks and hoodies, these are used to portray the themes for the video and connote the rioting theme from the video. Actors: Again like before, the actors represent the stereotypes and the themes from the music video. The actors are around the age of the audience for the music video, and the age of the stereotypes they are trying to portray in the video. Locations: Again, the locations for this music video are all set in London, this is because this is where the London riots took place. This is because of the theme of riots and violence is trying to be portrayed in this video, so they include this area. How is lighting used? The lighting in this video is very dark, and it stays like this the whole way through the video. This is so the audience can gain an understanding of the themes set throughout, the violence and riots being represented by the implication of this dark lighting. The lighting doesn't change throughout the video as the message stays the same throughout. How is Sound used? There are a few different sound elements used in this music video, at the very beginning you are able to hear a siren from a fire-engine/police vehicle, which helps to set the scene. This is very similar to the other music video analysed (Love this Town), as they are both trying to represent this rough area of London and keep the theme of violence which applies to the stereotypes they are portraying. Other sound effects used would be the smashing of props in the video and the sound of rioting at the end of the video. How is Editing used? The editing in the video is very simple, with only a few effects used. The transitions are fades and cuts to keep it very minimal, and there is only one notable use of VFX, which is when Lethal Bizzle is in the TV screens. Another effect used was the slow-motion effect, which is used a few different time throughout the video. Altogether, the editing is very simple, and this is done to stop the audience from getting distracted from the message they are trying to portray in this video. |
Travis Scott - Goosebumps
How is Meis-En-Scene used?
Costumes: The costumes worn by the performers in this music video are very simple with no notable branding. The clothes are very relaxed, and quite un-formal, but there seems to be no meaning behind the costumes worn. There are visual effects for the costumes used, which are wings at the end, and this is used to connote power, but that is all the costume used in this music video. Actors: The actors in this video are representative of stereotypical 20 year olds, this is because they need to represent the target audience for their product, which the age range of 18 - 25). This means that the product will appeal to the audience as they are of the same age. Other actors which aren't the performers are there to help set the scene for a party and gangs. Locations: The locations used in this music video is unclear, however, it is meant to represent a form of hell. This could be done to represent Travis Scott's mind and the way he feels. There are a few different settings within this location: a bedroom, carpark, fiery hell, and a thrown in hell. These all are used to connote the hellish location and Travis' mind. How is lighting used? The lighting in this video is very important, coloured lighting is used, and the lighting is used to connote the location, themes and emotions being portrayed in this music video. The lighting is very dark in this video, which helps to represent the hell trying to be shown. It also represents the emotion's of Travis as he is feeling very low and as if he is in hell. How is Sound used? The sound in this video is very minimal, this is because it's a music video. However, there are a few sound effects in this video, for example: screaming in the begging, snake sounds, dog barking, and cars reeving their engines. These are used to represent the shots and locations used, this can help build up the location and themes in the audience head. How is Editing used? The editing in this video is very dramatic, and complex, there are many different uses of visual effects, colouring and transitions. These all impact the audience as its very fast paced and is difficult to keep up with. All the effects used are to create confusion, which connotes the theme of hell and the mind of Travis. |
Fish Tank
How is Mise-En-Scene used?
Actors: The actors in the Fish Tank trailer are representative of the typical lower-class teenagers. The character is meant to be 15 so the relation to the audience will be 15 plus. Having this age for the character connote the storyline and content. This is because the age will represent the typical experiences which a teenager will have. Location: The location for this film trailer is set in a rough area in the UK, we are opened with a shot of council estate flats which really represents the theme for this video and the characters who we may encounter throughout. This location will connote the danger and rough area's which come to mind for the audience. Costume: The costumes worn in this film have actually won an award. The costumes are very stereotypical of teenagers who are both the characters and the target audience for this film. As the actors are in these costumes, this will help the audience to build up an idea on what the characters are like and their own beliefs / styles. The clothes worn in this trailer are very stereotypical of someone in the lower class, things such as; Jogging bottoms, trainers, chains and tracksuits. All of these help to connote what the characters are like and the location where this film is set. How is lighting used in this piece? The colouring in this film is very mild and life-like, this means that the colour grade is very flat and focus more on what colours are like in real life, this helps to represent the life representation set out in this film. The focused colours in this grade are light blues, yellows, blacks and greys. In the beginning of this trailer, the lighting is very dark, with a key focus of the blacks and the greys in the shots. This helps to mentally prepare the audience for the negative themes and the hard hitting content which they are about to watch. But, as the trailer progresses, we see more of brighter colours and the vision becomes a bit clearer as the shots are more lit and the focus isn't on as negative topics. The focused colours are more pink, yellow and blue which helps to represent hope and happiness. However, these colours keep on switching throughout the trailer as the themes change from more up-beat and hopefulness then back to the harshness of her situation and reality. How is sound used? In the beginning of the trailer, the opening sound is birds chirping and singing. We can also hear the wind which helps to calm the audience and set them up for this sequence. Then quite subtile music starts to play to help with this calmness being portrayed. Then, this music slowly grows into a crescendo as the scenes get more and more tense. |
