P3 - DEVELOP CONCEPT IDEAS AND SEQUENCE FORAN ANIMATION TO MEET A CLIENT BRIEF
My Chosen Brief:
Assignment for learners Unit 10:
Create a digital animation Scenario 4
“Tell a story”
Duration: 1 minute +
You have been asked by company TellAStory Ltd. to produce a short animation that tells a story to young people still in education. The story can be in any genre but must be creative and new and have a recognisable moral at the end. This will be produced by your own established production company. Their programme will be unique in that it will broadcast different stories relevant to the target audience on CBBC, Cbeebies, Nick Junior and Discovery Kids, so make it clear which channel will best suit your animation idea.
You are required to make an animation that will be used to highlight a moral dilemma relevant to the target audience and tell it in a creative animated way. The story must contain a beginning, middle and end.
TellAStory Ltd. have asked to have a themed character included as a central part of the animation. This character can then be used in future promotional material for example young peoples magazines and mobile apps.
TellAStory Ltd. want you to produce this animation as part of their new TV Programme called “Story Time”. This animation will creatively introduce the moral dilemma faced by the character and their solution to it.
TellAStory Ltd. have asked that the animation be highly visible and engaging for a young audience that have very short attention spans. The animation must be exported in a format that would be suitable for distribution across TV Broadcasters and the web.

Final Story Concept:
Beginning: Alien is in his space ship, and he is low on fuel.
Middle: Alien goes to earth and solves an issue to for fuel for his ship.
End: Alien flys back off home in his space ship
Scene by scene breakdown;
Scene 1
We se children in a classroom learning and discussing topics with their teacher, they are discussing about space and using telescopes.
Scene 2
We see an alien and a snail saying that they have to land as they are running out of fuel, (they use the emotion of happiness and positivity as fuel). They fly by Planet earth and start to land.
Scene 3
A student from the classroom is looking through a telescope out the window when he sees the spaceship coming down from the sky. He takes the telescope away form his eye and looks out the window to see the spaceship land in the school field.
Scene 4
The Snail says to the alien we need to make some people happy so we can have enough fuel to fly back home. The alien agrees and leaves the ship.
Scene 5
They boy leaves his classroom as he is curious to see what the spaceship is doing in the school field. He walks over to the alien to find out why there are there. The alien explains to the boy that they need to make people happy and do the right things so they can fly back home. They ask the boy to help them and he agrees.
Scene 6
The alien goes into the school, the children are currently on play time, so they are using toys and having fun. There are two children who are playing with the toy bricks, one boy has more bricks than the other boy, so the alien says that they could work together and there will be more bricks between them. The boys agree and they are happy playing with each other.
Scene 7
The alien goes back to his ship and there is enough fuel in it to get back home. So he and the snail go fly of on their way back home.

Running Time:
I believe that my running time for my show would be around about 2 minuets long. This is because I think that my story could be easily executed in this time, this is because story is quite basic. My story is like this because of my target audience. As they are of a much younger age, their attention span would typically be much smaller so they would not be able to watch a show with such little story for much longer. I think that If I did have it for a longer time period, then the show would be boring and begin to drag out a bit.
Clearly identified target audience:
Target Audience moodboard:
Target Audience by Oscar JH Carter on Scribd
The target audience for my show would be young children of ages around 1 - 6 years old. They would also be no specific gender aim for the show. To make sure that my animation will appeal to this audience, I will make sure that the animation has appealing colours that they would typically like. For example, bright and simple colours, like Blue, Pink and red. The show will also appeal to my audience because of the characters I have choses for the show. The Alien and Snail are classed as cute, so the audience would be attracted to them. Also, the child would be appealing to them as he would be around their age. Another way that my show will appeal to my audience is my animation type. This type is already shown on this channel so I already know that this animation type is going to be appealing for them. The finial way that the show would appeal to my audience is that some of the locations are relatable for the them. One of the sets is a classroom, this would be something which is similar and recognisable for them.

Risk Assessment:
Animation Risk Assessment Form by Oscar JH Carter on Scribd
In the risk assessment I did above, I made sure that the risks that I mentioned are plausible and that they have a potential to happen during my production process.
The first risk I have mentioned is that there is a lot of equipment which requires cables in the animation studio, that would mean that there is a potential tripping hazard. Specifically computers, as they will be everywhere. This could cause people to trip over and hurt themselves. To make sure that this risk is controlled, I will inform the everyone about the potential to trip, and also I will keep my eye out on this risk so I can warn another animator should they notice that a cable could cause a hazard.
The final risk is that there is aways a slim chance of there being a fire in the school building. The school has built in fire detectors and fire bells, so we would instantly be informed if there was an issue. To make sure that everyone is safe, I will go through the fire rules and where they need to go in the event of a fire. There will also be information about it in the fire rules in the animation studio.
The reason that the risks are very minimal is because the animating will be done on a computer. There is no need for equipment except from the computer itself, that is why the risks are very minimal.

Budget Considerations:
I have looked at my proposed animation, and I have found all of the budget requirements which I need to consider when making it. I need to know how much everything will cost, this is because I will be making my production on a budget. So, I will need to know how much each individual process will cost. this includes things such as equipment, and crew costs.
I would need to consider all of these costs when creating this animation. However, considering that I will be doing all of these jobs myself, the total cost would be much lower than that.
Gantt Chart
I have made this Gantt chat to help me when creating my animation. This is because I will be able to schedule when all my work needs to be done and to ensure that I meet the deadline when creating this animation. Also, when having a Gantt chart, it will allow me to understand when I should have each task completed by and alter what I am doing to ensure that I do meet the deadline of this production.
M2 - COMPLETE A SWOT ANALYSIS FOR THE INTENDED ANIMATION FOR THE CLIENT
SWOT: STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES, THREATS
Strengths:
One of the key strengths which my animation has is that it will be cheap for the client. This is because I create the animation on low budget, and I used a cheap way to actually create it. Animations such as 3D would be a lot more expensive to create, this will make the client happy as it will gain the the viewership which they require but not cost them a lot of money. Also, the animation has the potential to generate quite a bit of money, this is because it can be developed into other products. Lots of children's animations have matching toys, or clothing lines. This could be done with my animation, for example; there could be a toy replica of the space ship form the animation. There could also be clothing with pictures of the characters from the show in it. This therefore means that the show can have an turnover of a lot of profit, considering the fact that the animation is cheap to make and the marketing potential is very high. A further strength from creating my animation is that the equipment needed to create the actual animation is very minimal. This is because I won't be needing cameras, lighting and a large crew. It can all be done efficiently with a small team and a few computers. This means that the overall cost of production is again quite minimal and the final product can make a lot of money for the client. One more strength of this type of animation is that it is renewable, there are no limitations to the actual product as scenes and rigged characters can be used multiple times. This way we won't have to pay to get someone to create and animate characters and locations every time we want to make a new episode. A further strength is that my animation will follow the BBC's motto which is to Inform, Educate and Entertain. This is because my animation educates the audience about Sharing and being fair with one another. Also, the animation will be entertaining, this is because the show is aimed for young children so therefore the content will be bright and colourful.
Weaknesses:
A weakness of my animation is that it will take a long time to actually create, this is because it is stop frame animation, which is a long process. So even though my end product is to be around 5 minuets long, the entire process could take hours to actually record. This is before I even get to the editing process. So, this is a weakness as the client will need to spend a long time waiting for the animation to become complete before they are able to actually distribute the product.
Opportunities:
One opportunity for my TV programme is that the story and characters can be branched out into other digital platforms and mediums. An example of this is to create toys and figurines of the characters. This could be something that the children (target audience) would want to have if they enjoy the show. Other things such as books and comics could be produced. Other digital platforms which the show could branch out to are movies and games. There could be a movie about the characters and also an interactive game where the viewers can play as the characters from the show and help them solve the mysteries.
Threats:
A threat of my show could be that the show isn't as popular as other shows on the broadcaster. This is because there are more popular forms of animation now which are more visually appealing to the target audience, such as 3D animation. This could mean that the children would prefer to watch shows with this style of animation over the show which I have created. Also, famous shows such as Peppa Pig and Charlie and Lola, which have a big reputation and are well know with children are more likely to be watched than a new show which no one has ever heard of. So, we need to market the show to be an exiting new show that children will want to watch because it is a new show.
