P1 - EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES FOR ANIMATION
Star Wars - The Clone Wars:
|
Star Wars - The Clone Wars is the Genre Animated TV Show.
The style of Animation used is called 3D animation, this is Computer Generated Images. "Star Wars: The Clone Wars is an American 3D CGI animated television series created by George Lucas and produced by Lucasfilm Animation. The series originally aired on the US version of Cartoon Network on October 3, 2008. It is set in the fictional Star Wars galaxy during the three years between the prequel films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, the same time period as the previous 2D 2003 TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars." |
Structure and Techniques
When LucasFilm animation created this Television Series, they had a simple structure for creating it, this is the standard Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production. The Phases are:
Pre Production: Step 1 | Concept and Storyboards This is the first step which took place when they created StarWars the Clone Wars. Concept art was used to generate ideas about characters, places and environments. This is when they draw pictures to give them ideas before actually confirming their desired ideas. The concept is was really important for LucasFilm animation because they had to tailor their work to an existing product (The Star Wars Franchise). This is because they have set the programme to be set within the same universe and timeline as this story. Most of the concept art was based on existing concept are for the films, so it was easy for them to create ideas. A storyboard was created by LucasArts Animation, this consisted of the basic idea of how they wanted the story to look. They would get the concept art and create the storyboard by drawing how they want the story to go with basic drawings and notes to tell the creators in the Production Phase how it is meant to go and look. |
Step 2 | 3D Modeling Once the storyboard and the concept are is completed and approved by a client/director, the modelling task begins. This is when the computer animators create the concept art (characters, locations and environments) in a computer program. These are basic 3D outlines which later helps to look more of a representation of the concept art and storyboard. Step 3 | Texturing Once the Modelling step is completed, the texturing step begins. This is when 2D images are overlaid onto the 3D models to add colours, designs and textures. This is called mapping and is often where all the colour which you see comes from. These maps are often created in photo editing software such as Photoshop, and they are applied to the 3D models. |
Step 4 | Rigging and Skinning This is the stage where the creator's set up the characters to move and basic animations like talking. This is the last bit of character processing before the animation phase can begin. This is basically the stage where the characters made lifelike. The 'Rigging Process' is the method of creating a controllable 3D model (Skeleton) which is intended for animation. The 'Skinning Process' is the method of attaching the created 3D model to the previously rigged skeleton so then the model looks realistic and can be animated. |
|
Production:
Step 5 | Animation
The animation is the first step in the Production process, this when the animators take the 3D created models and make it move. There are a few different types of animation which can be used within the 3D animation Genre. They are Keyframe animation when the animator makes the object move frame by frame (similar to stop motion). Another method which can be used is when the animator places the objects on a thing called a spline, then they set them to follow a path or import motion capture data and apply it to a rigged character. The last way to create the animation is through the 3D software built-in physics engine, so it uses a generic editable code to animate the characters.
Step 6 | Lighting
Lighting is used very similarly to a real shoot, except the lighting is added afterwards. In 3D animation, lights don’t actually exist as they do in the real world. Lights in 3D are objects that are designed to simulate how lighting works in real life, but in order to obtain the results you’re after, you have to apply a number of settings, not only to the lights but to the materials.
Step 7 | Camera Angles and Techniques
Once all of the animations are created and the lighting is completed, the actual recording process begins. Firstly, there aren't any issues when filming a 3D animation which may occur when filming a real shoot. This is because there isn't a need for a lens, focusing controls, aperture and more. All of these features/functions are controlled by the 3D animation software. Because it is created in a software, there is no limitation to the number of cameras and positions used for them. And you can create many different camera effects such as motion blur, pan dolly and truck, this is because it isn't a physical object and it can go anywhere.
Step 8 | Rendering
Once all of the animations are recorded by the Cameras, the exporting process needs to begin. This is when the filmed sequences need to be created into a video format, so it can be used in Post-Production. They chose the video format which they want the clip to be exported to and then it gets exported. The exporting process can be quick or really long depending on the size of the animation, image resolution and the file type.
Post-Production:
Step 9 | Compositing and Special FX
Once the renders are completed, the touch-up and special effects are added to the clips. The composting section includes standard special effects such as explosions, morphs and more. This will help bring the animation to life, this is because it makes all the things which can't be created in animation phases.
Step 10 | Music and Foley
This is the step where audio is added to the clips. These are called Music and Foley. Foley is the sound effects used in the animation. This can give a scene extra depth and boost in audio. Usually, a music composer will be brought in to create the music/soundtracks for the animation. These are personalised to the shots to make it seem more dramatic and effective. A foley artist creates the sound effect for the animation, the can use many different props to create the sounds. These make the sounds more original and create a better sounding animation.
Step 11 | Editing and Final Output
This is the final stage of the animation creating process. This is where the composited renders, music and sound effects are all added together into the editing software. This is also used to make sure that all of the features are synchronised together and creates a professional looking animation. Once the Director and Client are satisfied with the final product, it is exported into the desired file type and resolution (suitable for broadcasting), the client receives the product and the process has ended.

Pros and Cons of 3D animation
Explain the pros and cons of this type of animation
Pros:
There are many pros of creating a 3D animation. They are:
3D animation is more realistic and aesthetically pleasing than animations such as 2D or Stop Motion. This is because they have a lot of freedom when creating them.
Computers and Tech are always being created and it is being developed all the time. So, this has an effect on the animation industry, this is because the overall graphics are getting better and more visually appealing. So the viewer is always getting a better animation.
3D models are faster to make when you create them. This is because us can recycle code and models from previous animations, which makes the process much faster as you aren't having to create models over and over again.
Children are now used to the 3D animation genre, so they expect most animations to be like it. So there is a higher audience demand which means they are likely to get more money for creating a 3D animation.
There is a higher amount of 3D animators now, this is because most animators are going to 3D animation as there is a higher demand for it. So it is easy for an employer to find people with high skill in 3D animation.

Cons:
There are many Cons of creating a 3D animation. They are:
There is a limited imagination used when creating a 3D animation, this is because it is only limited to what a computer can create. Whereas a 2D animation can have more scope depending on the artist.
The most popular (Top Grossing) animations which have ever been created were 2D animations. But, there is always the possibility that an animation created in 3D could become the top grossing.
There is a lot of needed effort and resources need when you create a 3D animation. This can be very costly as these are expensive utilities and you may not make as much back once you add up the cost of all of these.
As 3D animations are created on computers, there is always the possibility that the computer could glitch and you could lose your work. These can be caused by Bugs, Viruses and hardware errors, this can all contribute to making the 3D animation process harder.

How the Animation was made
Explain how the animation was made
There are 3 main phases when physically creating the 3D animation, they are:
Texturing
Once the Modelling step is completed, the texturing step begins. This is when 2D images are overlaid onto the 3D models to add colours, designs and textures. This is called mapping and is often where all the colour which you see comes from. These maps are often created in photo editing software such as Photoshop, and they different to the 3D models.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit:
|
"Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a 2005 British stop-motion animated comedy mystery film produced by Aardman Animations in partnership with DreamWorks Animation. United International Pictures distributed the film in the United Kingdom. It was directed by Nick Park and Steve Box.
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is part of the Wallace and Gromit short film series, created by Park. The film follows eccentric inventor Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) and his intelligent mute dog Gromit in their latest venture as pest control agents, as they come to the rescue of a village plagued by rabbits before an annual vegetable competition." |
Structure and Techniques
When Aardman Animations were creating the Wallace and Gromet - Curse of the Ware Rabbit, they had to go through a simple Process of the Production Phases. These were Pre-Production, Production and Post Production. Here is what they had to do for each Phase:
Pre Production: Step 1 | Concept and Storyboards This is the first step which took place when they created Wallace and Gromit - The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Concept art was used to generate ideas about characters, places and environments. This is when they draw pictures to give them ideas before actually confirming their desired controllable. They designed all of the characters, locations and props to makes sure that they appealed to their target audience of Children. A storyboard was created by Aardman Animations, this consisted of the basic idea of how they wanted the whole film to look. They would get the concept art and create the storyboard by drawing how they want the story to go with basic drawings and notes to tell the creators in the Production Phase how it is to go and look. Step 2 | 3D Modelling Once the storyboard and the concept are is completed and approved by a client/director, the modelling task begins. This is when they look at the concept art and create all of the characters, places and props into movable objects. Most of these will be Clay as this is the best for creating movements in animation. It also appeals to their target audience. The clay characters would have metal skeletons built to help with stability and movement, this is because it should look realistic and be appealing to the audience. Production: Step 3 | Lighting Lighting is very important for the animation, this is because it will make the animation look visually appealing and more realistic. They will use real lights to act like the sunlight, they will also use smaller lights to help with different features such as lights in sequence (StreetLights) or just to make the shot look better. Step 4 | Animation This is the phase where they actually film the film. This is the longest section of creating this animation type. You have to take a picture of every single frame that you want. This is done for 24 frames a second. (So every second of the sequence that you see, they took 24 different individual images). Between each image, the character, props and moving elements need to be moved slightly. This is done for every individual frame to make it look like a moving image. Post-Production Step 10 | Music and Foley This is the step where audio is added to the clips. These are called Music and Foley. Foley is the sound effects used in the animation. This can give a scene extra depth and boost in audio. Usually, a music composer will be brought in to create the music/soundtracks for the animation. This is also used to make sure that all of the features are synchronised together and creates a professional looking animation. Once the Director and Client are satisfied with the final product, it is exported into the desired file type and resolution (suitable for broadcasting), the client receives the product and the process has ended. |
Pros and Cons of Stop Motion animation
Explain the pros and cons of this type of animation
Pros:
Stop Motion is more pleasing and appealing than animations such as 2D or Line Drawn. This is because they have a lot of freedom when creating them they are simple to make.
Computers and Tech are helpful when creating them. For example, there are electric cranes for the cameras to make a more fluid and make the animation more visually appealing and looks better to the audience.
Children enjoy the Stop Motion animation because it is quite visually appealing as they are able to view it easily and understand what is going on. It is usually used for less popular genres in children TV such as Children Horror (Coraline and The Nightmare before Christmas).
It is quite rare so people appreciate it more. Animations such as 3D and 2D are becoming more popular and easy to make, so people are moving towards that. However, when you create a stop motion animation, people appreciate it more as it takes so long to create and it is rare.

P2 - DESCRIBE THE USES FOR DIGITISED ANIMATION IN THE MEDIA
Star Wars the Clone Wars:
As more star systems get swept into the Clone Wars, the valiant Jedi Knights struggle to maintain order. Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan learner Ahsoka Tano embark on a mission that brings them face-to-face with Jabba the Hutt. Plotting against them is evil Count Dooku and his agent, Asajj Ventress, who would ensure that the Jedis fail. Meanwhile, Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi lead the clone army against the forces of the Dark Side.
The use of characters: Describe the main protagonists and antagonists in your chosen mediums: The main protagonist in Star Wars the Clone Wars is Anakin Skywalker. He is a user of the force who goes on many different adventures and battles with his partner Obi-Wan Kenobi. His main goal and focus in season one are to kill Count Dooku and General Grievous and prevent them from using the power of the Dark side and the force to take over the entirety of the universe. The main antagonist is Chancellor Palpatine, however, we only see a few small sections with him in. He is controlling Count Dooku and General Grievous to take over the universe using the force and the power of the Dark Side. His ultimate goal is to destroy all of the rebel alliance and gain control over the entire universe using people such as Count Dooku and General Grievous to do it work for him. The series also encounter lots of different side characters which help along with the story giving information about the key story as well as informing the viewer about multiple different side stories. What links can you find between the character and the narrative themes within the mediums? The main narrative theme in Star Wars the Clone wars is Good vs Evil. This is because the main protagonist is there to fight off the evil antagonist of the show. This theme is represented in many ways throughout these entire series. Constant wars and battles would be a key example of this. They are always fighting each side of the battle in every single episode. Also, the main Good vs Evil is presented in the main story. This is because we follow the Protagonist through his battle with the evil. The evil is presented in many ways, this could be simply through a task of practising using the force on inanimate objects, or battling with Count Dooku. The fact that there is always an evil force in his path in every single episode shows that this constant theme of Good vs Evil is the narrative theme of the entire series. The use of environments and themes in the global cultural context of animations Describe the environment used in the animations you are studying - how is this environment represented? Is it a true representation of the global culture you live in? The environment is the combination of realistic nature and the override of the technology on the entire environment. They are simple forests and natural nature set areas. However, these often have a different alien type colour or style to them. This is so it reinforces the idea that it is set in space, and that there is an alien presence on all of these locations. It represents the already existing culture which is on earth right now, but it does have this technical and alien feel to it. The colours are usually different to what we would typically see, this therefore reinforces that it is a SCI-Fi set TV show. Also, all of the buildings and structures have a modern and technical approach to them. They all have an element of technology which isn't already existing on this planet. This is to also emphasise that it is set in the future and also set in space and alien theme. Are they realistic or idealistic? Why? The environments are realistic to a certain point of view. As it is plausible that environments could look like that in the future. However, it isn't something which could exist right now. So, no, it's not a realistic environment. However, the themes are very realistic. This is because the theme of War is happening right now. There is always an aspect of Good and Evil. This is the key theme throughout the show and therefore it is a realistic theme. Other themes which are shown in this TV series are Dark vs Light and Nature vs Industrialism. The Dark vs Light theme is realistic as it is again something that is happening right now and it is a topic which is discussed now. The news covers topics and this is very similar to Good vs Evil as its heavily present today. The other theme is Nature vs Industrialism, this theme is represented in the show by the nature being taken over and destroyed by the evil droid forces. They clear the path by destroying trees and other natural products. Also, the buildings shadowing the nature continues this theme. This is also a realistic theme as it is happening in real life. Deforestation is an issue in the present day and is where technology is taking over nature. Whether that be for fuel or for room to build new buildings. |
Analyse - What journey do they go through in the plot? - Episode 11 // Dooku Captured
Before the battle of Vancouver, the main Protagonist Anakin Skywalker was captured by Count Dooku on purpose. This took place in an ice field near where the battle took place. He was taken inside the ship where at the hangar, he fought the people who captured him. However, he purposely lost so he could be put in a prison cell. His Partner ( Obi-Wan Kenobi) then snuck into the ship where he released Anakin and they went to go and arrest Count Dooku. However, Count Dooku escaped from their attack in a pod. They followed him until he crashes landed in the wilderness down bellow on the nearest planet. However, the Protagonists were shot down and they also crash landed near him. They walk to a nearby cave where they plan to get him. However, Count Dooku beat them to it and collapsed the cave on top of them. This causes Anakin to lose his lightsaber and Count Dooku exits.
The Jedi try to find a way out of the cave, whilst Count Dooku come across Hondo Ohanaka's pirate crew. As he is outnumbered, chooses to be taken by them as their ransom to the republic. Meanwhile, the Jedi disturbed a tribe living in the cave as they are figuring out how to escape. Finding this tribe made them realise that they are on the planet Vanquor.
After battling with the tribe, they trigger a poison gas profit in the cave, just as Ahsoka Tank and a few clone troopers uncover the cave entrance. After Supreme Chancellor Palpatine received the message from Hondo Ohnaka that they have captured Count Dooku for ransom, they agree to meet with the pirates to get Count Dooku back. They agree that they must arrive unarmed with him. Once they meet with Hondo Ohnaka, they have guns pointed at them as they go to meet the prisoner. After Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi enter Dooku's cell and joke about his imprisonment. He is happy that the Jedi came to join him in captivity so soon. He warned that WeeQuay were devious and deceitful, and also stupid, and also that the Jedi shouldn't underestimate them. When they leave Dooku's cell, the Jedi were invited to go to a meal with the pirate crew at their Grand Hall. The Jedi confirm to Mace Windu and Palpatine that Dooku has actually been captured by the pirates and that they want a ransom for him.
The Jedi take a seat at the meal and were given drinks which were drugged. As Hondo made a toast to the fact that they have got the ransom, the Jedi switch their drinks with Weequay sitting next to them, retiring the toast to an pretending that they are new friends. Then Weequay passes out from the drugs which were in the drinks. Anakin thinks about how the drunken pirates were able to capture the Count when the Jedi couldn't. Then, Anakin made a toast to unexpected gifts.
How do these characters represent either: the views of the writer/studio they come from / the place they come from in the world?
Anakin represents the studio he comes from. This is because all of the Protagonists from Lucas Studios focus on the Light vs Dark / Good vs Evil created/animated themes. All of the main characters (examples: Luke Skywalker, Rei and Jyn), follow this theme. They all fight against a Dark side and evil for the greater good of the entire universe. This is typical of a show/film from Lucas Arts and therefore creates content which their audience will expect when watching these shows.
How do the narrative themes match the character and the environment?
The Narrative theme of Good vs Evil match the characters and the environment. This is because the character's stories revolve around this theme, the battles and the entire plot of the series. But, also the environment represents this theme. This is because the environment is being taken over by evil as well. The character narrative theme of good vs evil is presented thought the actual visual of the good vs evil. The battles and the storyline revolve around this theme. All of the episodes consists of an element of the theme Good vs Evil as there is always a fight or a battle and there is always the protagonist vs the antagonist. The environment continues this them both subtlety and also obviously. The subtle feature is present in every episode, where this can be presented by nature being towered over by cites of technology or the nature having elements of technology in them. The most obvious way that this is presented is when the republic uses droids to destroy the forests to clear a path for them. This is a literal representation of this theme and reinforces it throughout the entire series.
The use of storyline based on a situation or series of events, or storyline based on a character
Is it plot driven or is the plot driven by the actions of the character? If it is a situation or series of events - what problems occur? How do the characters react/cope? What messages are sent to the target audience?
The entire plot of the series is driven by the actions of the characters. This is because the story develops as the characters do. Throughout the series, the characters meet new characters and evils. This develops the entire storyline and makes the story progress to the end where they eventually end the evil of the narrative theme. The show is based on a series of events. This is created by many problems such as battles, bosses and the evil which stands in their path. This usually consists of them chasing and then fighting the evil of that episode. defers The characters react to this by taking every mission one at a time. Each episode consists of an element of good vs evil, which they have to react to. They usually win the subplot in each episode and this usually leads them to more information about the darker force in action. This allows them to continue with each mission because they will eventually find out totally about the great evil. The messages which are sent to the target audience are that you need to persist to complete your goals. They eventual create peace in the universe and that is represented by trial and error, also thought constant efforts in finding the issues and solving them. Also, that good always wins, this is to show that evil is an issue but constant effort in saving the planet is possible and you are able to do so.

They are the two key protagonists of the story. Their goal is to make the town safe from pesky rabbits who want to eat the crops for the vegetable competition. The primary antagonist of the show is the Were-Rabbit. Who is eating all of the huge vegetables before the completion? Other antagonists include Victor, who is in competition with Wallace to gain the affections of Lady Tottington. Other characters are present in the film, such as townspeople who are also entering the competitions for the biggest vegetable. The small bunnies who are considered pests for the crops. What links can you find between the character and the narrative themes within the mediums? The link between the characters and the narrative theme is that they are looking to defeat the evil Wear-Rabbit. This is the narrative theme of Good vs Evil. This is represented throughout the film as there are two key elements of Good vs Evil, this is the battle of Wallace and Grommet vs the Were-Rabbit and also the battle between Wallace and Victor for the love of Lady Toddington. The character of Wallace is the main focus of the show as both elements of this Good vs Evil revolve around him. He has to solve the mystery of the were-rabbit, which ends up being him. Also, he needs to beat Victor in impressing Lady Toddington enough to make her fancy him. The use of environments and themes in the global cultural context of animations Describe the environment used in the animations you are studying - how is this environment represented? Is it a true representation of the global culture you live in? The environment is a true representation of the world we live in. The film aims to be set on present day earth and therefore this is reflected in the environment throughout the film. All of the homes, towns and buildings are replicas of pre-existing buildings or have at least had inspiration from. There is a slight element of it not being a true representation of the characters and models are created out of clay. And this does change the way the overall film looks. So some features such as trees and homes are slightly disorientated. But they are all based on real-life features to create the feeling that it is set on earth in the present day. Are they realistic or idealistic? Why? The idea environments and themes are realistic as they consist of themes and environments which already exists in the real world. The theme of love is consistent throughout the film and is something that most people can relate to. This is because the theme Love is talked about a lot in real life and lots of people go through the struggle that Wallace is going through in this sequence. Also, the theme of good and evil is present very realistically in this film. It is done through the idea of pest control, which is an issue of the present day as is the issue of Good vs Evil. There is often talk about war and evil on the news and this is an example of that but just in a less threatening way as the film is aimed at children. So, therefore, the theme is very realistic. As I mentioned before about the environment, it is very realistic and plausible as a real-life setting. This is because all of the sets are based on real-life buildings and places and the creators have taken into consideration the realism aspect of the film. So yes, the environment is very realistic. Analyse - What journey do they go through in the plot? It is a few weeks before the Tottington Hall annual Giant Vegetable contest, and the winner of the biggest vegetable will win the golden carrot award. The entirety of the townspeople is protecting their crops from the rabbits who are surrounding the town area. Wallace and Grommet have set up a business supplying homes with Anti-Rabbit traps to protect their focused. As Wallace and Grommet have captured so many rabbits, they have found that they are running out of room to house them all. So he decided to create the Mind Manipulation-O-Matic machine. This is to change the way that the rabbits think so they don't steal all of the vegetables. He tests out the machine and it appears to work as the rabbits don't show any interest in vegetables.Over that night, multiple townspeople mention a giant Were-Rabbit who is trying to eat their prised vegetables. In prevention of this issue, Lady Toddington holds a meeting where Lord Victor says that he will shoot the Were-Rabbit. However, Lady Toddington requests that people continue with the use of 'Anti-Pesto' services as it is more humane. Lord Victor gets jealous of Wallace as he fancies Lady Toddington and she has taken Wallace's side. Victor then comes across Wallace in the forest, however, Wallace transforms into the Were-Rabbit in front of him. Gromit also sees this transformation and takes him back home to protect him. Victor gets the three 24 Carrot gold bullets from the church to use against the Were-Rabbit on the next evening. The Giant Vegetable contest begins the next day. Gromit manages to convince Wallace that he is the Were-Rabbit and he hides away. As the evening comes, Wallace turns into the Were-Rabbit and Victor comes to his house to kill him. Gromit creates a distraction on Victor which allows Wallace to escape. Wallace, as the Were-Rabbit, goes to the fair where he creates havoc. Victor is out of bullets at this point, and in desperation, he grabs the Golden Carrot Trophy and uses it as a bullet in his blunderbuss. Wallace takes Lady Toddington as Victor is chasing him. Then Gromit arrives, he gets into an aeroplane and has a dogfight with Victor. Gromit flies his plane into the line of fire of Victor as he is about to shoot Wallace and his plane starts to fall to the ground. Wallace jumps off the tower and grabs Gromit to sacrifice himself for his friend. He lands in the cheese tent. Victor gloats about his victory, but Lady Toddington hits him with her Giant Carrot. The townspeople start to gather around Wallace. He transforms back into his human self and appears to be dead. However, Gromit uses some Stinking Bishop (Cheese) to bring him back to consciousness. Lady Toddington rewards Gromit the golden carrot for is a sacrifice of his giant marrow. |
How do these characters represent either: the views of the writer/studio they come from/the place they come from in the world?
The characters Wallace and Gromit represent the work they come from in a positive way. They set an example of a way a human should behave, and this is because the show is aimed at children and most shows which are meant to teach a lesson in some form. The fact that Wallace and Gromit are very caring and good friends to each other help to connote this meaning or being a role model to the child audience.
How do the narrative themes match the character and the environment?
The narrative theme of Good vs Evil doesn't match the characters or the environment as you would expect them too. The protagonists aren't very typical of a hero figure, this is because they take a more soft approach and want to be protective of everything they do. Typical in the narrative theme of Good vs Evil, the protagonist would be very forward thinking and protective of everything. But, Wallace is softer and doesn't go for a typical approach to this issue. Victor, the antagonist, is also not very representative of this theme, this is because he takes again a more soft approach. But, his morals for his actions meet with this theme. The environment also isn't very representative of this theme as well. This is because the environment is very safe and typical of a children's film, there isn't any representation of the evil in the narrative theme. The environment always stays typical and doesn't change. So it also doesn't represent the narrative theme.
The use of storyline based on a situation or series of events, or storyline based on a character
Is it plot driven or is the plot driven by the actions of the character? If it is a situation or series of events - what problems occur? How do the characters react/cope? What messages are sent to the target audience?
The plot of this film is driven by the actions of the characters. this is because the story develops as the characters and their actions do. Throughout the film, the characters find out more about the mystery of the Were-Rabbit and figure out how to prevent the issue. This mystery develops the entire storyline and makes the story progress to the end where this issue is resolved and everything goes back to normal. The mystery is solved by developing the characters knowledge of the rabbits and how the Were-Rabbit is Wallace. The problem which occurs is how they will defeat the Were-Rabbit before the Annual Giant Vegetable contest. They encounter the Rabbit multiple times before actually defeating it. The way that the protagonist copes with this issue is that they find out what the cause of it is. Gromit finds out that Wallace is the Were-Rabbit, and he tells him to prevent the issue from happening again and again. However, Victor finds out as well and tries to kill Wallace. Gromit saves him and also saves the town from the Were-Rabbit. The message to the target audience of this film is to have good friendships. Animation 1- Clash Royal: The last Second (Advert)
What type of animation was it?
The animation style for the Clash Royal advert is called 3D animation. Who is the target audience in terms of: Age: The age range for this advert would be from 12 to 18. This is because this is the target audience for the actual game. This advert will appeal to this audience because the advert has a simple plot and understandable storyline. The colours are very attractive which will appeal to the audience. Also, the content of war will appeal to the audience as well because this is something which is stereotypically attractive to people of ages 12 - 18. Race: There isn't a specific race in mind when watching this advertisement. This is mainly because the game is available on a worldwide platform. So, therefore, it will meet many different people of different races and ethnic backgrounds. Also, there is a mixture of different races and ethnic characters include in this animation so there isn't any exclusion. Gender: I think that this advertisement focuses on the male gender. This is because the advert consists of themes such as war and fighting which will typically appeal to the male gender. However, the actual animation includes a female protagonist which would appeal to a female audience. So, therefore the advert does appeal to both the male and female genders. Marital Status: In this advertisement, there isn't any form of targeting for couples or people with a marital status. This is mainly because the game is aimed at children and teenagers. Income: I think there would be disposable income, coming from the parents. Mainly because the app has payment features and micro transaction in it. However, these aren't compulsory. Occupation: Again, the Clash Royal advert, there isn’t a specific occupation that is targeted. This is because the target audience is aged 12 - 18 and therefore aren't likely to have a job/occupation where they will be earning a taxable income. Educational Stage: For the educational stage, they would be in secondary/sixth form. This is because people of their age need to be in education. On what platform did this animation distribute? This advert has been aired on TV, but it is mostly viewed on video streaming websites such as YouTube and Twitch.TV. This is because these sites have a large gaming culture and this will appeal to its audience. How were the visuals and narratives used to communicate purpose and genre? The purpose of this advertisement is to promote the game, Clash Royal. The genre of this animation is Action and Comedy. The visuals in this film indicate the cartoon comedic style of the animation. This is because there are funny characters and odd representations of humans. Also, the narrative is very simple in this advert, the storyline is basic and understandable for multiple ages and ethnic backgrounds. The expressions used by the characters in this sequence connote the genre and themes of the advert. There are also used to help the audience understand the sequence a bit better, this is because the facial expressions, which are over exaggerated, convey what the characters are feeling and what is actually happening in the sequence. For example, the girl with the bow has a very concentrated face, which is used to confirm the theme of action/adventure in this sequence. Another example would be the goblin at the end of the advert. His face is scrunched up, which expresses the comedic theme in this advert. There is a narrative voice at the end of the advertisement. This is used to promote the actual product, however, the voice conveys the comedic theme and also helps to represent the time the game is set in. The voice has a comedic accent which could make the audience laugh and make them want to play the game. The length of the animation and why is it this length? The animation is 50 seconds long, which is standard for a TV advertisement. This is because the target audience's attention span would typically last this long. Also, they are able to inform the audience of the story without boring them but also it is short enough to make the audience want to see more and therefore get the game. |
Animation 2- Peppa Pig - Peppa's Party (TV Series)
What sort of animation is it?
The TV show Peppa Pig is a 2D animation programme. Who is the target audience in terms of: Age: The age range for Peppa Pig would probably be around 2 - 6, mainly because it is aired on Channel 5 and Nick Jr. It is aired at the time where children of ages 2 - 6 are most likely to be watching tv. Race: When watching this programme, there isn't a specific race targeted for this product. This is mainly because the characters being represented in the product aren't of any specific race, as they are animals. So, therefore, it will be able to be viewed by many different people from different ethnic backgrounds. Gender: I don't think that this product has a specific gender in mind for its audience. This is because the product represents many genders and is targeted to a very young audience. The themes discussed in the episodes revolve around family and lesson that children of both genders will learn whilst growing up, the issues aren't specific to certain genders. Marital Status: Marital Status wouldn't apply to this, as the show is aimed at children of a very young age. Income: There will be some form of disposable income, this is because the audience will need a device to watch the show on, but also there is merchandise available to purchase from the show. Occupation: There wouldn't be an occupation in mind for the target audience, this is because they will be of a very young age and therefore wouldn't be employed. Educational Stage: The educational stage for the target would be at primary school, or before education. This is because the target audience for the show is very young, and therefore would be at this educational stage. On what platform did this animation distribute? This animation is distributed on TV channels targeted for children (example - Milkshake). There are also episodes available to purchase via DVD and also on streaming websites such as Now TV. How were the visuals and narratives used to communicate purpose and genre? The purpose of this TV show is to entertain its audience whilst teaching them important life lessons. The genre of this TV show is children animation. The visuals used in the series help the audience to enjoy the characters as they are very cute and appealing. The use of the characters helps to connote purpose. They are created to be animals, which is something the target audience can recognise and also relate to, this is because the characters are set to be the same age.The narrative in these episodes is very simple, it is also easily identifiable for the target audience, this is because what is said would also typically be said by the people in their lives (e.g. - family, friends and at school). The length of the animation and why is it this length? Each episode is around 5 minutes long, this is because the creator wanted the show to be short and simple. This is to appeal to the audience as they are of a young age and their concentration will be able to focus for this long. |
Animation 3 - Over the Hedge - Still (Movie)
What type of animation was it?
The animation style for Over the Hedge Movie is called 3D animation. Who is the target audience in terms of: Age: The age range would probably be around 3 - 10, the movie can also appeal to a family audience as well, this is because the movie has an easy to follow plot with jokes for the children and adults, this way they all stay entertained. The movie's main audience (3 - 10) would be attracted to this film for its animation style. The colours are very vibrant and the animation style is most popular with an audience of that age. Race: Again, similar to most of these products, there isn't a specific race which this movie is targeted to. This is because the film was distributed worldwide, so it could reach people of many different ethnic backgrounds. Also, there is a variety of races in the characters and voice actors, which created a diverse and inclusive movie. Gender: I think that Over the Hedge was designed to appeal to both genders. This is mainly because there are lead roles in acted and played by both the male and female gender. One reason for this would be that the male gender would be appealed to the action genre, whereas the female audience would be appealed to the female characters. Marital Status: For the marital status of the audience, this wouldn't really apply to the audience. This is because the film is designed and created for an audience of a much younger age (3 - 10). So they wouldn't be married. However, the parents who could be watching with them may be married. Income: There would have to be some form of disposable income for the viewers of this product. However, the money wouldn't be supplied by the target audience but the guardians of them. The would need disposable income to buy the actual product itself, but also for the other products which are part of the 'Over the Hedge' brand. An example of this would be the 'Over the Hedge' video game. Occupation: Again, as the other animations, there isn’t a specific occupation which this movie is targeted to. This is because of the age of the target audience wouldn't have a paying job. Educational Stage: For the viewership stage, the audience would be in primary school. On what platform did this animation distribute? Over the Hedge was released in Cinema's first, then it was realised on multiple media platforms. It was mainly realised on DVD and Blu-Ray. However, it was also made available on media streaming sites such as Amazon. How were the visuals and narratives used to communicate purpose and genre? The purpose of the Over the Hedge movie was to teach a young audience about sharing, morals, and being kind to your true friends. The film's genre was a comedy, which would appeal to the target audience. And the visuals of this film indicate the genre because of the simple 3D cartoon style which it is created in. This style of animation will attract the target audience and inform them that it is a comedy because of the characters that they are seeing. In the advert for 'Over the Hedge', there are many shots and visual elements which imply the comedic genre of this film. For example, one of the key characters in the film (Hammy), is all dirty and crazy. The shot where he is pretending to have a contagious disease uses a tilted angle, which implies the craziness and comedic features of this film. Other examples of where the visuals create purpose is when Stella (the skunk) gasses out a room. They edit this with another scene in the film (an explosion with the view from space) to imply that her gas is blowing up like a bomb. The characters/actors also play a key part in this as they also help convey purpose and genre. Their voices create a comedic style and make the entire film funny. For example, Hammy's voice has lots of different effects to convey this purpose of comedy. Also, the movement and simplified expressions of the animals demonstrate this fear and comedic effects. So this helps the younger audience to understand what is happening in each scene, and how they should be feeling along with them. The length of the animation and why is it this length? The Over the Hedge movie's running time was 83 minutes long. This is a typical length for a children's movie as it gives the creators enough time to tell the story but the movie won't bore the audience whilst they are watching it. |
D1 - Compare the different styles of animations across global cultures:
Animations chose for comparison
I have chosen two different animated films for comparison, one is Toy Story 3 (Created by an American Company) and the other is My Neighbour Totoro (which is created by an Asian company)

My Neighbour Totoro

Comparisons:
Types of animation used:
The film Toy Story 3 is created/animated in the 3D animation style. The film is created by Disney which is a large conglomerate company based in America. On the other hand, My Neighbour Totoro is a hybrid animation style. This is because the animation type is called Anime, which is the combination of 2D and 3D animation. The company who created this film is called Studio Ghibli, which is a Japanese based company. Toy Story 3 has been created in this 3D style of animation as it is almost standard for animated children films to be created like this. Disney's animations are almost all created in 3D, especially the newer ones. This animation style is standardised across the western culture and has become the main form of animation seen in Box Office films. In comparison to this, My neighbour Totoro is created in this 3D/2D hybrid animation called Anime. And as the 3D animation in the western culture, it has been standardised but in the eastern culture. This is therefore expected that most animations produced in these eastern countries are going to be in this Anime animation style. Because of the different animation types, this can lead to different production times on each animation. 3D is known to take a long time to create because there need to be lots of different elements in the animation which can take long times to individual add together. However, conglomerate companies such as Disney have the budget to employ lots of different animators so the production time is significantly quicker. The Animation style of Anime can also take a lot of time to create, depending on how it is done. Some Anime's are drawn frame by frame and end up taking years to make, whereas some are created with the help of CGI (Computer-generated imagery) which gives it this 3D animation style. |
Target Audience:
As Toy Story 3 is created by Disney, the target audience will be very similar to most of their other 3D animated products. The target audience for Toy Story 3 would be between 5 - 12, and this is for many reasons. Firstly, the characters will appeal to this audience, this is because they are toys which is something the target audience will typically have so they will instantly be able to relate to them. The storyline also will appeal to the target audience as they discuss letting go and thinking about the future, which is a key lesson for children growing up. Also, the actual animation style will appeal to the audience as it is most common for this age range to watch this type of animation. The colours used in this animation are very vibrant which will appeal to this target audience.
My Neighbour Totoro is created by Studio Ghibli, which is a company know for the Anime style of animating, they are expected to create animations in this style. The target audience for My Neighbour Totoro is 5 - 15, the age gap is larger than Toy Story 3 because the artistic theme can be understood and interpreted at different ages, this way you can watch the film multiple times and gain something different each time. But, the key reasons for this film appealing to the target audience is the characters. This is because there are at a similar age to the target audience so the audience can relate to the characters. This means that they are likely to understand the issues which the characters are facing in the film. Also. the storyline will appeal to the audience as it is about family, which is something most of the target audience will have experienced. Also, the animation style will appeal to the target audience as it is something that they are used to (standardised animation style from the Far East), which is also appealing to the eye as it usually consists of soft colours and looks as if it is hand painted.

Also, the animation style will appeal to the target audience as it is something that they are used to (standardised animation style from the Far East), which is also appealing to the eye as it usually consists of soft colours and looks as if it is hand painted.
Duration:
As Toy Story 3 and My Neighbour Totoro are both films, they have similar running times. Toy Story 3 runs for 1 hr and 43 minutes long, whereas My Neighbour Totoro is 1 hr and 26 mins long. The timing of these defers for multiple reasons. Toy Story 3 is longer than My neighbour Totoro because of the character development, the film is part of a series, and this is the third instalment. The audience will have gained an attachment to the characters over this time, so they need to have more information on the characters and plot because there are more characters being introduced to the story. However, My neighbour Totoro is shorter as it is a stand-alone film. The characters need less time to for the audience to become attached to and the storyline is simple and easy to understand, this way the film doesn't need to belong.

Characters / Stories:
In Toy Story 3, the characters (Toys) represent different feelings but the storyline talks about letting go. The main characters all makeup key emotions and feelings which people have. For example, woody is brave, but he often shows moods of jealousy, whereas Hamm the Pig shows emotions of fear and anxiety. All of these emotions shown through these characters develop and deal with these different emotions. For example, Hamm overcomes his fear and deals with the bad guys himself without doubting himself or requiring help. Woody learns not to be as jealous and continue being a good leader. The film's main plot is about Andy, and that he is now 17 and ready to head off to college, leaving his toys (the main characters - Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the toys) to wonder about what is going to happen next. The toys are accidentally donated to the Sunnyside Daycare centre. They are happy that they are being played with again, however, their excitement goes when they find out the leader is evil. Now, all of the toys must join forces in one final, crazy scheme to escape their confines and return home. Comparing to My Neighbour Totoro, the difference in characters representation and actual plot have both similarities and differences. The characters in my Neighbour Totoro also represent emotions and feelings, as they do in Toy Story 3. The main character Totoro represents the emotions that the children are feeling. There are multiple different theories on what Totoro is representing, however, this is the most viable. The children in this film have moved away as they wait for their mother to get better as she is unwell. So Totoro is meant to represent their coping mechanism for this issue they are going through. The storyline for this film follows two sisters, Satsuki and Mei. They have moved to the countryside in an old country home. They live with their father as they are waiting for their mother to recover from her illness in the hospital nearby. The two young sisters explore their new home and the surrounding areas when they discover the magic of the area and meet spirits and Totoro. |
Colours used:
In Toy Story 3, the colours used are very vibrant and bright. This is for multiple reasons, but it is mostly to appeal to the target audience of the film. The colours used in the film are usually focused on Red, Blue Green and pink. This helps to represent but also appeal the target audience. This is because these colours are the primary colours which are usually associated with people of a younger age. Toys and childhood objects tend to be this colour so these colour choices make the audience appeal as they will easily identify this and have an instant attraction.
However, My Neighbour Totoro uses these colours to help convey emotion as well as to attract the target audience. They do use the primary colours in the film, however, they also used darker tones of these colours and also darker colours. This is to appeal to a much older audience as some of the themes in My Neighbour Totoro will be better understood when the audience is at an older age. But in regards to the colours representing emotion, this is done through the characters. The sprites and magical creatures of this film are often bright and vibrant colours, which represent the magic and mystery of these characters.

Cultural message/themes:
In these animations, they both portray different themes. The theme/message in Toy Story 3 is quite simple which is designed to be like this considering the target audience. The story has themes and messages of growing up, letting go and overcoming friend/family issues. The characters in this film all represent emotions and therefore act out as these emotions. Andy, the original owner of the toys no longer plays with them and decides to let go, which is a hard lesson to learn but is something the audience will have experienced already, so it is something that they can relate to.
The messages/themes in My Neighbour Totoro are understandable for the target audience, but it does also have some dark themes to it. The sprites and magical creatures represent emotions, similarly to Toy Story 3, but there is a dark undertone of death as the mother of the main characters is very ill. Some of the younger audience won't really understand this, however, they will enjoy the magical characters and themes throughout the movie.

Studios which made them:
Pixar is a worldwide conglomerate studio who have made animations such as Finding Dory, and The Incredibles 2. Pixar is a subsidiary of Disney and therefore works under the Disney name. Studio Ghibli is also very well know around the world producing some of the Top grossing Anime films. They work solo on their products. The differences between the companies are the messages which they discuss. Studio Ghibli focuses on the more deep and controversial themes, especially considering their target audience. The messages which they cover tend to be realistic themes and can be quite shocking to watch. This is different to Pixar as they aim for a more sheltered approach to stories. For example, in My Neighbour Totoro, the theme consists of lost as a key character is unwell and in the hospital. are This is because of each of the Studio's demographics. Other differences include the budget of the studios, Pixar has an extremely large budget, this is because they are a subsidiary of the large conglomerate studio of Disney. Studio Ghibli also has a large budget, but it is nowhere near as big as the budget for Pixar. Furthermore, the colouring used in their products is different. In Pixar products, the colouring tends to be more vibrant which is attractive to the target audience. Whereas, Studio Ghibli uses more realistic tones. This helps to represent the more serious and controversial themes discussed in their products. |
